Maya May is an LA-based stand-up comedian known for her smart, fun, and socially conscious brand of humor, featuring at some of the country’s best independent comedy shows, including Hot Tub with Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braunholer, Women Crush Wednesdays with Marcella Arguello, and Butterboy with Aparna Nancherla, Maeve Higgins, and Jo Firestone. She’s performed at dozens of colleges and has been featured on CNBC, Fox, ABC, and iHeartRadio. Her comedy is just like she is: a healthy balance of optimism and rage, mischievous and deliciously over-the-top. A high-energy and positive performer, Maya keeps audiences engaged with carefully crafted jokes that layer her life experiences (including 8 years in Argentina) with observations on race, politics, class, and gender. A crowd-favorite at festivals including All Jane and the Asheville Comedy Festival, Maya has performed everywhere from the Laugh Factory Chicago to the Hollywood Improv. But her favorite place to perform is wherever you are. Awwwwww. Unless you're a 3-hour drive from a major airport. She hates that.

An IFP Project:Involve screenwriting fellow, Maya May has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Miami where she was awarded TA of the Year for her work teaching Introduction to Creative Writing. Her workshops are designed to inspire and support students in their writing process.

Why is that Funny?
“I did stand-up comedy for 18 years. Ten of those years were spent learning, four years were spent refining, and four years were spent in wild success.” ~ Steve Martin
This interactive workshop (part writing, part discussion) gives students insight into the joke writing process. Through the analysis of iconic stand-up sets, students learn about joke construction and then apply that knowledge in a joke writing activity using material from their own lives. “Why is that Funny?” introduces participants to the building blocks of comedic writing so they can incorporate them into their own writing process and begin to develop their own style.

What’s Your Problem?
“When something goes wrong in your life, just yell ‘Plot Twist’ and move on.” ~ Anonymous
Based on studies that humor improves critical thinking skills, this discussion-based workshop explores problem-solving from a comedian’s perspective. “What’s Your Problem?” begins with an overview of stand-up comedy concepts, followed by a writing activity and discussion. Using the included workbook, participants will learn how to apply concepts from stand-up comedy to change the way they approach problem-solving.
